When Should You Apply for Camp America?

Timing your Camp America application correctly makes a surprising difference to the quality of your placement. Apply too late and the best camps have already filled their spots. Apply at the right time and you have the most options.

The Application Timeline

September to November — This is when applications open for the following summer, and also when the earliest and most organised applicants get started. If you’re the kind of person who likes to have things sorted well in advance, this window is for you. The advantage is that camps are actively recruiting during this period and the pool of applicants is smaller.
December to January — The most common window for applications. Most applicants start here, either because they’ve just made the decision over the Christmas period or because university recruitment fairs in the autumn finally pushed them to it. You’ll still get a good placement if you apply now, but the widest selection of camps is available earlier.
February to March — Still viable but you’re now competing in a more crowded pool. Some camps will already have filled certain specialist roles. You can still get placed, but your options for specific role types and locations may be narrower.
April onwards — Late. Not impossible — camps sometimes have last-minute vacancies — but you’re relying on gaps rather than genuine choice. Not recommended if you can avoid it.

Recruitment Fairs

Camp America and other agencies run recruitment fairs in UK cities (London, Leeds and others) typically in January and February. These are worth attending if you can, for two reasons: firstly, you can meet representatives from specific camps in person and make a direct impression; secondly, some camps hire on the spot at fairs, which bypasses the waiting period of the normal online process.
As Maisie Craddock discussed in the podcast interview, fairs have a specific dynamic — camps are watching the room before you approach them. Be visible, be engaged, and have done your research on which camps you want to approach.

How Long Does the Process Take?

From application to confirmed placement, allow two to four months. The process involves creating your profile, being interviewed or matched by a camp, accepting a placement, completing visa paperwork, attending an orientation, and booking travel. None of these steps are particularly complicated but they all take time, which is another reason applying early gives you more breathing room.

The Short Answer

Apply in September or October if you’re certain you want to go. Apply in December or January at the latest if you’re still making the decision. Don’t apply in April hoping for the best.
